Effective ways to lower your risk of cancer – Natural News

(NaturalNews) The statistics on cancer are discouraging; however, there are things that you can do that will lower your risk of getting cancer, such as not smoking. Lung cancer kills thousands of people each year and also contributes to other kinds of cancers. If you smoke, make a decision to stop smoking. In addition, be careful of second hand smoke. Breathing in smoke from someone else can be just as dangerous as it is if you smoke.

Other effective ways to lower your risk of cancer:

Exercise and lower your weight

Another risk in getting cancer is being overweight or obese. Being overweight can cause several kinds of cancers, such as gall bladder, endometrial, kidney and pancreatic cancers. Many in our country are inactive or do little exercise during the day. Some don’t exercise, because they feel that they’re too busy during the day or don’t feel that it’s necessary. However, by doing 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day by walking or riding a bike, you can cut your risk of some cancers by almost 50 percent.

Put good nutrition in your life and lower stress

Practicing good nutrition is not only a smart thing to do; it can also reduce the risk of certain cancers, especially prostate cancer, through the consumption of tomatoes and watermelon. Other healthy foods are whole grains and beans, low-fat dairy, fish and lean meats. Consuming fresh fruits and vegetables every day may reduce your risk of getting several kinds of cancers. In addition, we all know that stress is not good for our health, but we often find it hard to relax. However, you can lower your stress by meditating, exercising – such as walking – and trying some relations methods, such as deep breathing. Finding ways to relax can indeed lower your risk for cancer, because it will keep you from unhealthy habits such as overeating or smoking.

Screening tests for certain cancers are good; however, they should be done after discussing the benefits and harms of screening with your doctor. Pap tests and colonoscopies can be quite effective. Mammograms and PSA testing are not preventative measures but can detect cancer and help make treatment more manageable. Talk with your doctor before undergoing any screening test.

Preventative measures also help

In addition, another preventative measure is knowing your family’s health history. Knowing your family’s health history can help prevent certain cancers from attacking and invading your body. Wearing sunglasses, a broad rimmed hat and sunscreen can also prevent skin cancer. In addition, it is important to also wear loose-fitting clothing that covers as much of your skin as possible. When putting on sunscreen, don’t be cheap. Put a generous amount on all areas of your skin that will be exposed. Most importantly, stay away from tanning beds and sunlamps. It is also important to avoid risky behavior such as not practicing safe sex or sharing needles with another person. These unsafe behaviors can lead to cancer.

To conclude, lowering your risk of cancer is not difficult; however, it does require eating sensibly, being careful when exposed to the sun, getting annual checkups and getting moderate exercise.
